"Something has to make our own wisdom bearable, something has to save us from the woeful eternal fever of biological destiny. Therefore, we have invented Art" - Muriel Barbery

Dualism in Storytelling by Hiroko Matshushita

Hiroko’s accordion fold book reflects the dualistic elements commonly explored within fairytales, such as good vs. evil and old vs. young. She then cleverly illustrated both sides of the long strip of paper with two versions of the same story- one with a happy ending, and the other with an unhappy one.

“The point is that these two stories are connected to each other through holes represented as windows and a mirror, reversing inside and outside, and giving the perspective of different points of view.”

An e-book version of the unhappy ending can be viewed here!

Tomoko Shioyasu (1972-) creates her tapestries by cutting into large single sheets of paper with utility knives and soldering irons. As she plays with negative spaces her organic patterns begin to emerge. When asked about the content in her work Shioyasu replied, “Simply nature itself, particularly that which has existed over an extended period of time—rocks, trees, water channels, cells. I want to look into the essence and roots of life, making works that focus on these basic forms.”.

In collaboration with sound artist Spencer Topel, sculptor Soo Sunny Park has created a radiant interactive installation that audibly responds to movement. The large-scale piece, entitled Capturing Resonance, hangs from the third floor ceiling of deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Massachusetts, illuminating the tight corridors.
